Andy's Academy

This year's Academy performances will give Andy's Kids an opportunity to showcase the highlights of the season's new workshop and lab structure, combining the John C. Russell Playwriting Lab, the Directing Lab, and our Studio series of short and long-form workshops. 

GREENHOUSE INITIATIVE: Shaun Tan's The Arrival

For our second Greenhouse Initiative, Andy's Summer Playhouse will transform The Arrival, a migrant story told as a series of wordless images, into a workshop performance.

The Arrival tells the story of a man who leaves his wife and child in an impoverished town, seeking better prospects in an unknown country on the other side of a vast ocean. He eventually finds himself in a bewildering city of foreign customs, peculiar animals, curious floating objects and indecipherable languages. With nothing more than a suitcase and a handful of currency, the immigrant must find a place to live, food to eat and some kind of gainful employment. He is helped along the way by sympathetic strangers, each carrying their own unspoken history: stories of struggle and survival in a world of incomprehensible violence, upheaval and hope.

apprenticeship program

Andy’s provides apprenticeship opportunities for kids between the ages of 12 and 18. This is a core of the Andy’s experience; all of our shows are run by kids. This season, our apprentices will have the opportunity to choose an area of focus within design or theatre management. Design opportunities include scenic, lighting, costumes, projections, sound and props. Management opportunities include working in the box office, serving as house manager, assisting stage management, assisting directing, and working as stage crew.
