our teen show, froggy, has some dark aspects, and fittingly it is designed in the "film noir" style. Roger ebert described noir as a genre "which at no time misleads you into thinking there is going to be a happy ending."
film noir /ˌfilm ˈnwär/ noun
a style or genre of cinematographic film marked by a mood of pessimism, fatalism, and menace.
typically, a noir story has a detective in search of a mysterious "femme fatale." playwright jen haley has flipped this trope and our main character is froggy, a woman in search of a disappearing man.
What other aspects of froggy could be considered "noir"?
it's kind of a chicken or the egg question...
what do you think?
video games: violence
the topic of violence in video games has been in the news again lately. In March, President Donald Trump said during a White House meeting on school safety that the nation needs to address what young people are seeing. "I'm hearing more and more people saying the level of violence on video games is really shaping young people's thoughts," he said.
but experts are divided as to whether playing violent video games causes aggressive behavior, or if people with more violent tendencies are drawn to these games.
what do you feel the pros and cons of gaming are?
video games: addiction
there are also a lot of opinions about addiction to video games. some people feel games are too consuming and can be detrimental to a young person's development. Others believe that there are actually many cognitive benefits.
"As gaming researchers Patrick Markey and Christopher Ferguson (2017) point out in a recent book, video gaming raises dopamine levels in the brain to about the same degree that eating a slice of pepperoni pizza or dish of ice cream does (without the calories)." (from "sense and nonsense about video game addiction")
suicide and ptsd
there have been a few notable suicides lately and the topic is definitely being talked about. In froggy, we see different references to suicide and one is a result of post traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). this can be a scary subject--sometimes it feels like just bringing it up is causing a person to consider it. But most psychiatrists feel it's better to discuss it instead making it a taboo subject. The recent Netflix series 13 Reasons Why has brought forward the issue of teen suicide. The producers have created some helpful resources for families to have healthy conversations.
